On July 20, my second field season will start! It will be a mix of plot mapping and functional trait collecting for common species in the Northern Wheatbelt of Western Australia.
There will be a sizable crew from the Mayfield Lab with up to 4-6 members at one time. The lab will be working on projects relating to pollination, seed dispersal, and plant interactions! The whole crew, though, is a bit worried that many species/plants will not germinate this year. It was the driest June on record around our research sites (getting 0.06mm of precipitation compared to 60mm - the long term average). This is a potential problem for us but it is a real problem for the farmers of the region (check out this article and this one).
Overall it is predicted to be drier and hotter this field season than last, so we will just have to see what happens!
